| Until 1972, Scouts
working on the Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks had to complete
a long list of basic skills to earn each rank. In 1972 skills were grouped
into 12 "skill awards" (Camping, Citizenship, Communications, Community
Living, Conservation, Cooking, Environment, Family Living, First Aid, Hiking,
Physical Fitness, Swimming), each represented by a metal loop to be worn
on the belt. These provided "instant recognition" as Scouts worked toward
ranks. The BSA discontinued skill awards and returned to the previous system
at the end of 1989.
In 1992 a new "first in the nation" program area was developed at Camp Hinds to provide opportunities for first year campers to work on the individual requirements for Tenderfoot, Seconds Class, and First Class. This area was first setup in the area of the current CIT area (Boone Campsite) and the previous Chapel Rock area. At that time Scoutcraft was located in the Boone field area and the area now occuped by West campsite. By 1994 National Camping School was promoting the idea of a First Year Camper program at Boy Scout Resident camps. In 1994 Scoutcraft was moved back to the "demostration area", Basic Scout skills was moved to the area across the road from Baden-Powell, and West Campsite was moved to its current location near Ridgway campsite. In 2009 the Basic scout skills area was renamed Polaris and afternoon and evening activites were added to the program. |
