C.O.P.E. is an acronym for "Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience." a COPE Course is a custom built challenge course or ropes course designed to meet the Boy Scouts of America Project C.O.P.E. standards.

The C.O.P.E Course was built at Camp in time for the 1995 camping season to provide a challenging high adventure program for the boys in camp as well as for other Scouting and youth groups who could sign up for its use, provided that qualified instructors are used.

C.O.P.E involves 4 type of activities:

  • Team building initiative games
  • Low elements
  • Climbing
  • High elements

The initiative games have been held in several places including near the training center, behind the rec hall, and near Cadigan Lodge.

The low course elements follow a series of obstacles and challenges through the forest, leading back towards the archery range.

Climbing takes place at the tower near Bates Cabin and at rock cliffs behind the Training Center.  John Young, Scout Ececutive at the time the tower was built, insisted that the tower be built in a very visible location near the power lines.  Because of safety issues, the tower was later moved to its current location.

The high course elements begin to the east of Bates Cabin, actually in the area which was once the camp dump (now filled and covered). You have to watch out for poison ivy in that area, too! It has several high rope challenges including a zip line.
