STEAM Center and broken promises

Pine Tree Council Executive Board member Bill Thornton and wife Jacky generously donated $75,000 to establish the Thornton Family STEM / Nova Center at Camp William Hinds - also know as the Camp Hinds STEAM Centter.  The center opened in the summer of 2017.

STEAM fields are Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, together with Art and design. This program aims to teach Scouts to think critically and have an engineering and design approach to real-world problems while building on their mathematics and science base. STEAM programs add art and design to STEM activities by drawing on design principles and encouraging creative solutions.
The goal is to encourage Scouts to take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These Scouts will be the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!
A four draft proposal was designed. The goal of this proposal was to set a frame work for a dynamic 4 year program for the Thornton STEAM Center at Camp William Hinds. The program consists of five elements:
* Older Boy Programs
* Merit Badge Programs
* Afternoon Activities (also known as Rotations)
* Evening Activities
* Webelos Activities
For the first two years STEAM & Trail to Eagle occupied the entire basement as shown on the left.  In the off season the basement was rented to the Windham School Department.  At the August 2018 board meeting they voted to move the Council Office into the basement with a promise to build two new classrooms.  STEAM lost the rooms Old Speck Mt., Pleasant Mt., and part of Mt Abraham as shown on the right.

When the summer of 2019 arrived, there were no new classrooms and the STEAM program we were doing in 6 rooms in 2017 & 2018 was condensed into the three remaining rooms.

At the end of the summer, the council office took over all the rest of the available space in the basement and the Thornton Family STEAM center was no longer. The Mt. Abraham room became the office of the new Scout Executive and Sugarloaf and Saddleback Mt rooms became the council conference room.

By 2022 the Scout Shop was moved in to the Old Speck Mt Room.
