Under Bill Scoville’s
leadership we decided around 1960 to set up an obstacle course as a patrol
challenge activity. We staked out a large rectangle in the first
field, across from where Cadigan Lodge is now located.
Using donated telephone poles as uprights where needed, we built a four-lane course, which included bars to crawl under, hurdles to leap, a moat to swing over, a climbing wall and a tire run. We painted the four lanes in four bright colors – red, yellow, green and blue, but the colors soon were toned down to brown when Scout Executive Clint Rose got a look at it and told us that it was too gaudy for a Scout camp! Mother Nature eventually took its course and the remaining elements were all removed, leaving the field to live on as a ball field and parking lot. In 1994 we tried to revive the idea of an obstacle course with a two lane course in the wood to the south of the parking lot. The obstacle course was added as an option for troop rotation activities. But it never really caught on and was disassembled a few years later. |
