To provide a
supply of clean water a series of pumps and pump houses have been installed
at camp. The original deep-water pump is located on the left of the
Boone field. It is a drilled well, one hundred and twenty-eight feet
deep. The shelter over this well was built so it could be taken apart to
give access to the shaft below. Originally the motor and pump were
located above ground, driving a long series of vertical wooden shafts,
screwed together, which operated the valves at the bottom. In the
fifties this antiquated system was replaced with a submersible pump at
the bottom of the well, which pushed the water to the surface, into a pressure
tank, and through the pipelines to camp.
To maintain water pressure there was a tank installed at the high point next to Skid Ridge cabin and one in the kitchen behind the stoves. The Tenny Senior Camp had its own water supply, a well drilled on their side of the river from which water was piped to a couple of drinking fountains, to the scoutmaster’s cabin, and to the latrine. Eventually this supply was connected by an underwater pipe to the kitchen supply lines. These two wells proved inadequate to meet all the needs of camp so to supply water to Harvard and Yale latrines a lake pump was installed, just behind Androscoggin cabin. The water was fed into a storage tank then by underground pipes to the two latrines. Before the improved pump was installed at Boone another well was developed, with a driven point, on the river bank behind Presumpscot cabin. This pump supplied some of the needs of the kitchen for water, especially when the potato room was in use. In more recent years additional
sources of water have been needed to supply the kitchen, three shower
houses and running water to all camp sites, so a new well was drilled in
the wooded area between Scoutcraft and Byrd campsite.
