Our first rifle
range was built where the Little League Field now exists, with a shelter
facing the north and a high berm of earth which was bulldozed up as a backstop.
This was in about 1960, when Camp Director Bill Scoville said to Frank
Maguire during opening staff week “we need a rifle range shelter up there,
so you can build one.” Fred Foster obtained some lumber for the structure
and concrete pyramids for the base and he ran a heavy-duty length of electrical
wire from the Training Center to the site to run a power saw. Then, with
no blueprint, we built a shelter, much like the one we have today.
The range remained there for many years until it was replaced by the new range which is located in our former gravel pit behind the Cadigan parking lot. The move was made following the recommendations of the camp inspection team which felt it was unsafe for Scouts to cross Plains Road to get to the Rifle Range. Under the directions of Ken Cole the National Guard built the concrete-walled storage bunker in that area and the new shelter was erected where it stands today. For a while from about 1980thru 1985 there was a Cub Scout B-B Range next to the Rifle Range. By 1986 a larger area was cleared for the shotgun range in the same area. |
