This glacial
erratic boulder has most likely been in the same spot for over twelve thousand
years, since the last glacier melted away.
From 1927 until 1959 signaling was a requirement for Scout advancement – both Morse code and semaphore were part of the Second Class and First Class requirements. This rock, located near MacArthur campsite, became one end of a signaling course in camp. Scouts would climb onto the rock and send their messages by signal flag to other boys standing near the dining hall. At that distance no voices would carry so the message had to be understood purely by properly sending and receiving the coded messages. This practice ended with changes in the requirements for advancement, but old-timers still remember ”signal rock.” |
