Provisonal camp
staff members never had a problem with what to do to occupy their evenings
- their responsibilities began at reveille and did not end until well after
taps, every day, with 40 boys to monitor all day, every day. Not
so for the “central staff” who worked hard but on a different schedule.
When evening program ended many staff members were not ready for bed and
looked for diversion, especially when nights off outside of camp were extremely
limited.
The Rec Hall provided ping pong tables and not much else. In the fifties a radio was made available (before TV came close to being a possibility), and the Curry family got a couple of long padded settees from a grange hall somewhere for seating, but these did not satisfy the need for a comfortable staff lounge. Many a night, staff members would assemble outside the old health lodge around adirondack chairs and socialize. From 1986 through 1989 Pine Tree cabin was turned into a staff recreation room, later the old health lodge was given that role. When that old building was torn down a new structure, planned as a staff lounge, was built in its place. It had to be done in 2 different years, half in 2000 and half in 2001 to satisfy the town and the shore line ordinance. Provided with lounge chairs, a TV and space to relax, it now serves the needs of the staff after hours. It was dedicated to Peter Burr, long-time Scouter from Troop 58 in Cumberland. |
