WEST BEACH &
BOARDWALK
In the early days the area now know as West Beach was used for a site for swamping for Rowing and Canoeing Merit Badges, but not much else. The first Pine Tree Council Cub Scout Day Camp was organized and directed by Dean B. Zaharis at Camp Hinds in 1982. Although most of the activities were held in the area by Bates Cabin, swimming and boating needed to be held in camp. These activities were scheduled at the waterfront and Chipmunk Point from 12:30 to 1:30 while the Boy Scouts were in the dining hall for lunch. This scheduled required that all Cub Scouts have aquatics at the same time. By the mid nineties Day Camp decided
to use West Beach for swimming so they could have only one or two dens
swimming at a time. A rough trail had been used as a nature trail
and for the swamp romp from Kennebec Cabin to Nubble Brook. This
route was used to access West Beach. In wet weather the trail became
muddy and hard to pass.
Since 1999 the West Beach has been
used for FunPack weekends, Day Camp and Camp Hinds Boy Scout program for
many aqautics programs. In the fall of 2010, the Order of the Arrow
moved and rebuilt a section of the ramp which had been damaged and shifted
off its footings from the ice.
