I first met Paul on Winter Camp Staff in 1987.  Paul was Scoutmaster for the program at the time and I was Computer Merit Badge counselor.  Paul was a Mac guy and I was using TRS-80s borrowed from Scarborough High School.  I had fun teasting him about dragging the Macintosh HD icon to the trash can to see what would happen!  He wouldn't let me near his Mac.

Paul and I worked together at Winter Camp for 15 or more years, 6 Girl Scout camporees, several Wood Badge Courses, one summer at Hinds together, and many other Scouting events.  Over all this time, we became very close friends.  I will miss him so much.

In prep for one event, we were working on the grocery list.  We had it on a excel sheet that we were mailing back and forth to make adjustments.  I initially developed the list for the salads.  I sent it to Paul to check.  When it came back to me, the green peppers were missing, so I added them back.  I made some other adjustments elsewhere and sent it back to Paul.  When it came back, the green peppers were gone again!  This happened a couple of times.  So it turned out that Paul didn't like green peppers, so he thought we could save a little money by not buying them!  After that I always teasted him about green peppers on the menu.

I just heard about Paul I wanted to let you know that Paul was a person I looked up to and cared about even if I had a terrible way of showing it. I wish I could have let him known that and shown him how much I’ve grown. Winter camp was everything to me and someday I hope to come back to it when I’m get to come home.

The following are some of the thoughts and wishes that were posted on Facebook.
He was the first kind soul I met when I was hired. Always encouraging and supportive.  He’d poke his head into my office with encouraging words too.  “Don’t give up” he’d say.
~ Susan Shoberg
He was such the nicest man. He was funny too! He sure loved Scouting.  My condolences. He was such a great friend and Winter Camp Scouter. I enjoyed working with him at the Scout Shop. He will surely be missed.
~ Debbie Mileson
Paul was one of the best scouters and man in general that I’ve known.
~ Sherry H Robinson
Paul was a good man and great Scouter. He is sitting around the great campfire in the sky now, probably sharing a story or two. RIP.
~ Gary Hauger
Condolences to Paul's family. He will be missed dearly.
~ Wayne Holden
I first met Paul and Sue when we worked on Maine Jamboree and I was new to Maine. He showed me the ropes and told me who everyone was. He and Chris Labbe worked together as educators, so it was important that when Paul and I were together and Chris was not, a picture must be taken. He was the dispatcher at Jamborees and Maine Fest, always at winter camp and making sure I ate right, a Wood Badge great, Scout Shop Experience, a man who understood how Scouting works (in practice and theory). A wonderful friend. The guy who made things work and made it all fun. They don't come any better.
~ Mike Labbe
Paul was a long-time volunteer in Snowshoe District and K-Valley serving on the advancement committee.

Paul was truly one of a kind. He was so welcoming and made you feel special. He encouraged me to grow in Scouting and was the driving force in my taking Woodbadge. I will miss his hugs and our conversations. My sincere condolences to his family.

This makes my heart hurt. So kind, cheerful, and sincere. Comforted to read all of the warmth and love in these posts. May his memory be a blessing.

Heart broken right now. Many many fun memories from barbecues at Bomazeen to Woodbadge will be missed.

Paul was very highly thought of in scouting. I’ve heard so many in his scouting family talk about Paul in a quick mention or story. You are all in my thoughts as you grieve the loss of your friend.

Safe home Paul, such a big loss to those of us who have worked with him over the years. I was always proud to have been in the same Vigil Class with him.

It’s been 35 + years since I first met Paul. He was a scouter through and through. Pine Tree has lost a good one. My condolences.
~ Erik Hedblom
Good evening all. This is Stephannie, Paul’s daughter. On behalf of my mother and brother, we thank you for your kind words and prayers.
We won’t be having services as my dad wished to be cremated and then have his ashes scattered over Casco Bay which we will do in a small, private family gathering sometime in late spring, early summer next year.
He loved Scouting and all that it involved and it is so heartwarming to see how much of an impact he made.
