With a heavy heart, I am sharing the sad news that our dear friend, former teacher, Maine State Senator, and longtime scout camp director Peter Curran passed away peacefully in his sleep this past Saturday morning. Peter touched countless lives as an educator, public servant, and mentor, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. At his request, his brother David has shared that there will be no memorial service. Please keep Peter and his family in your thoughts, and hold onto your favorite memories of him.

One of the best camp directors Camp Hinds ever had. He was also a long time Westbrook High teacher.

I have many fond memories of Pete from the 70s but my favorite memory was digging up the time capsule from the 75th anniversary of camp in the dark on the parade field.
It was pretty disappointing because there was some water damage.
I will miss Pete.

Peter was an excellent Camp Director at camp William Hinds. A pleasure to work for and he put campers, leaders, and staff first in every decision he made! RIP Peter Curran!

When you first join camp staff you are certain to hear that you need to become a role model as some young Scout will look up to you.  When I was that young Scout, Peter was my hero.  One summer he was the table leader at my table in the dining hall.  He went out of his way to get know each of us.  I don't remember why, but the end of the week I ended up in the health lodge.  Peter came to visit me.  He could tell I was upset - I had a 500 word essay to write for Wildlife Management Merit Badge and I wasn't up to doing it.  Pete volunteered to help me.  I dictated and he wrote it out for me and brought the completed essay to my merit badge counselor.  He was a great staffer - someone truely worthy to be looked up to.
